1% for the Planet: The Music. Songs for the Earth



1,126 companies around the globe have join 1% for the Planet, commiting themselves to donate 1% of their sales to almost 1,900 environmental organisations. Come January 2010, members of the public will be able to also support 1% for the Planet's on going works.

1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1, a digital album is due for release at this time. More than 40 artists, the like of including Jack Johnson, Brandi Carlile, Jackson Browne, and Angilique Kidjo have "donated rare and exclusive tracks to produce the first album dedicated to supporting the environment." Many of the participating artists are themselves members of 1% for the Planet.

According to a media released posted with SNEWS the album sell for $9.98 (Does that old trick still work? What is wrong with an honest $10?) Apparently Apple's iTunes will carry the album, but something called an 'eco-download card', made of recycled materials, will also be available from bricks and mortar retail stores, beginning with 25 Patagonia stores, over the US holiday period.

With this card music lovers, and environmentalists will be able to download tracks by entering the card's code at http://music.onepercentfortheplanet.org, as an alternative to pumping out more polycarbonate plastic CDs.

There will also be a 1% For the Planet 'music widget,' which is aid to contain video of Jack Johnson and Emmet Malloy talking about 1%. Additionally the widget will provide streaming clips of each song and allow the purchase of either individual tracks or the whole shebang. The music widget is embeddable , so individuals and 1% non-profits can promote the album.
